This was a day eagerly waited throughout Europe - a possibility to see a total solar eclipse. The 100% line didn't go over Geneva, so Bjoern Schwentker got an idea to organize a bus trip near Strasbourg, France. The places were sold out pretty quickly, and early on the Wednesday morning 11.8. two buses filled with summer students set out for the trip. |
|
The departure was at 4.00 am, it was still dark.
After about six hours of driving (and only one short break) we were stuck in a traffic jam, we weren't the only ones that wanted to see the eclipse. About an hour later (11 am) the sun started slowly to get covered by the moon. As we were still on the bus, people rushed to the windows to see something.
At noon we had gotten off the motorway and stopped at a little village called Stutzheim-Offenheim in Alsace. The sky had been covered by clouds, but just perfectly there was a hole at this point. People started to set up their cameras to be ready for the event.
Yep, although this looks very much like moon, it is the sun photographed through the safety glasses. About 25 minutes before the "real thing".
Whoa, closing up. Of course we all had safety glasses, Sami and Virve enjoying the view here.
People gathered on this small grass field to wait. Look at the sky in the background - not many holes in the cloud coverage!
Bjoern, the main organizer of the trip.
Two minutes. It was already a lot darker.
This is it. Sorry for the picture, it tells you practically nothing. In reality the sky was beautiful dark blue and the corona around the sun was simply magnificent!
