Midsummer 1999 at Geneva

<< Back to index

The Nordisk Club in Geneva, Switzerland organized a Midsummer party 26.6.1999. The location was Terrain St Jacob, Meyrin - a grass field with barbecue facilities near the French border.

The party was a mix of traditions in the Scandinavian countries, with at least some Finnish, Swedish and Danish elements. In addition to the Scandinavians living in the area, the Summer Students at CERN were invited to join the party. I would guess that about 100-200 people showed up.

Update on 30.6.1999: Most of the Summer Students' names added to the descriptions, thanks to Jan.

Pole and witch The party began by dressing up the midsummerpole, a Swedish tradition. When I arrived, this was already done and people began gathering around the pole to play games, led by two beautiful Swedes. You can also see a witch on the left that belongs to Danish midsummer.
Perfect pairs The kids and students made perfectly matching pairs. From right to left: Ruth, Stefan, Jan, Telina, Caroline, Bram, Roelf.
Frogs have
no ears Playing "The frogs have no ears".
Head, knees
and toes This gave people some exercise, one had to touch his head, knees and toes quickly in a row.
Pens and bottles Here a pen was tied by a string around your waist, hanging loose in the back. You had to get it in a bottle without touching with hands, of course. The game was organized as a competition between five teams. Erkki and Sami were among the first to try it, with one of our friendly instructors watching behind.
Pens and bottles
2 Some might even consider this a bit embarrassing...
Watching... ... but other team members watching the performances had fun. :-)
Wheelbarrows You could almost imagine the wheels...
Grande finale The final game was full of speed - even with feet tied together. Bram and Jan had a nice style.
Beer for winners The proud winners got beer.
