Some summer students In the evening, people gathered into small groups for chatting: Jan in the front, Dafni and Andy in the middle and Albin lying on the grass.
Some
summer students From the left: Paul, Havar, Emma, Jim and Alan.
Raining Later in the evening, it started raining. Freya and Peter improvising without an umbrella.
Umbrellas Some people had umbrellas, here are Esa and Jukka.
Smoke Enjoying the night behind the smoke.
Burning the pole As a bonfire is an important part of Finnish midsummer traditions, we decided we should try to build one. According to the Swedes, the pole isn't built exactly for that purpose, but the Finns overnumbered the Swedes in the party by a fair margin anyway. :-)
Jumping over fire The fresh leaves didn't burn very well, but we got enough flames and smoke for Erkki to show how to jump over the fire.
Hard work Trying to get it burn better - with little success.
Markku and
Virve Markku and Virve.
Beautiful Finns These Finns under the tree seemed to just invite me to take a picture. You also get the email addresses easily by promising to send them the pics. :-)
Bigger bonfire Around midnight we finally got a decent bonfire. It gave also a vague feeling of sauna, one of the things we Finns miss here so much.
Tent There had been some shower of rain earlier, but after 1.30 it really started pouring. Luckily there was a big tent nearby. We didn't know who it belonged to, but rushed in anyway. What happened after that I don't know, as I decided to head for home. Maybe someone will tell...
