On Thursday the lift to Mont Fort was open. Mont Fort at 3330 meters of altitude is the highest peak you can reach in Verbier without hiking or using a helicopter. Pretty nice compared to 1500 meters down in the village. I was again with Saku, Tuomas and Ville and this was one of the few times we had to queue. After about 20 minutes we were at the top.
aut_4267.jpg The marked slope down the mountain is steep and always full of bumps. We were heading to the back side, an unmarked but well known off-piste run. It is also steep, of course, but much more enjoyable at least for powder lovers. The beginning of this almost legendary descent can be seen on the left.
aut_4263.jpg The "obligatory" shot at the cross on the top.
aut_4270.jpg Ville and the view behind the mountain. It was rather windy at the top, as you can see from the fast flying snow flakes.
aut_4275.jpg Going down, enjoying the ride and weather...
aut_4278.jpg As you can see, we weren't the first ones here. Fortunately in many spots it was possible to find at least some untouched surface and draw your own lines in the snow.
aut_4281.jpg Peke, one of the main organizers.
aut_4283.jpg At times it was more hiking than downhill skiing. This was one of the places that looked a bit risky in respect to avalanches.
aut_4292.jpg Sunglasses and suntan cream were almost a must.
aut_4293.jpg After descending perhaps 1000 meters of altitude we came to the dam we already had seen from Tortin, the other side.
aut_4296.jpg About a third of the whole Skipoli group was here having a break. We stayed for a while and then skied down to Tortin. We had spent about two hours just coming down, and it was certainly worth every minute!
aut_4299.jpg In the afternoon the sandwiches at Offshore cafe were tastier than ever. A big chicken and cheese baguette and half a liter of coke was our usual catch.
aut_4302.jpg This is Le Pub Mont Fort, the most popular after ski place. Half price drinks at the Happy Hour from 4 to 5 pm.
